As promised, here are the winners of the 2021-22 Desert Runner Trail Series and a few fun stats mixed in. This was the 11th year for some of these races and a nice little milestone for Aravaipa Running and how far we’ve come.

View from the Pass Mountain 50 Mile course

As you all know, a lot can happen over the course of the seven race series, beginning in November with Pass Mountain. Pulling from your three best races keeps things interesting and opens up the top spots to a lot more runners then you may see on a typical race day. You don’t have to win a single race to make the podium in the series.

Here are a few fun facts updated for our 2021-22 DRT Series:

Hummingbird Series

  • This series was added in the Spring of 2020 to give a home to our 5Km races and is only active in the Spring DRT Series.
  • 158 different women completed a race in this series. 106 men completed at least one Hummingbird Series race. 9 Runners completed all four races!
  • We had 4 different winners for each of the Spring races on both the men and women’s podium.
  • Tracy Campagnano led the way as she WON all four of her Spring races!
  • Matthew Hamilton took the men’s overall spot by winning all three of the races he entered!
  • Tina Dahlmann finished as the top lady in the master’s division for both the Hummingbird & Quail Series, so she is awarded in the Quail Series (longer of the two), meaning Donna Jacobson Will take home the first place master’s award.
  • Fun fact: the Hummingbird Series saw runners toe the line from 8 years old to 73 years young!!

Quail Series

  • 290 different women completed a race. 242 men completed at least one race.
  • We saw 6 different winners for the men and 6 different winners for the women in the Quail Series.
  • We had competitors ranging from 7 years old to 81 years young in the Quail Series! Now that’s impressive.
  • Steve Cullen ran strong in the final three Spring races on his way to the overall Quail Series win.
  • Kiona Ogle finished five DRT Series races including wins at Pass Mountain, Cave Creek Thriller, and second at McDowell Mountain Frenzy on her way to the top lady spot in the Quail Series.
  • Keith Gazda, at 61 years young, finished third in the Open Division of both the Hummingbird & Quail Series, taking the hardware from the Quail Series home.
  • Kevin Morris had won the Hummingbird Master’s Division the last two seasons before taking home first place in the Master’s Quail Division this year.
  • Tina Dahlmann won the Master’s Division in the Hummingbird & Quail Series, taking home the award in the Quail Series.
  • We have a new winner in the Youth Division (17 and younger) for both the men and women. Emily Perkins (14) finished all three Fall races for the win. Owen Dueck (12) finished the final two Spring races to take home the hardware.

Roadrunner Series

  • 292 different women completed a race. 310 men completed at least one race. Runners aging from 10 to 73 years old completed a race.
  • Yuval Zurai finished 6 of 7 races including a win and 2 second place finishes. This is the third consecutive year Yuval has won the Roadrunner division and he has now completed 19 of the last 21 DRT Series races! This year took a strong finish at Mesquite to come from behind and secure first place by just 36 points.
  • Cinthia Womack had a great winter, completing the last six DRT Series races on her way to the Open Division first place spot.
  • Denise Pope (64) & Gary Arne (64) both won the Grandmaster’s Division as they each completed three strong finishes in the Spring Series.

Owl Series

  • 225 different women completed a race. 317 men completed at least one race. We had runners ranging in age from 13 to 75 years old!
  • Heather Johnson won the Open Division for the ladies, completing four of the seven races.
  • Kevin McClintock joined us for the Spring DRT Series, capped off with a strong showing at Mesquite to secure the overall win by just 15 points!
  • Peter Coury (66) & Taffy Corbett (68) each completed three races to secure the Grandmaster’s Division award for the men and women, respectively.

Hawk Ultra Series

Hawk Stand-alone Awards
  • 236 different women completed a race. 402 men completed at least one race. Runners aging from 14 to 74 completed at least one Ultra with us this year.
  • Nicole Hanson finished first for the ladies in the Hawk/Ultra Division, completing two races that include a win at Coldwater Rumble to hold off Carmen Enns by a mere 6 points!
  • Aaron Barber finished three ultras in the Spring Series including a win at Mesquite Canyon to take home first place in the Hawk/Ultra Division.
  • Bill Nictakis, at 62 years old, toed the line for 6 Ultras after running all 7 in last year’s series, repeating as your Grandmaster’s Division winner.

In addition to overall awards, we will also have a masters category for runners 40 years of age or older. Returning in 2021-22 for the Quail & Roadrunner Series, we are awarding our top Grand Master’s Division runner for all you bad a** runners still getting after it into your 60’s and 70’s. A junior division overall winner will also be awarded for those of you hitting the trail scene under the age of 17!

Here are a couple things to remember with the Series standings:

-Points are allocated based upon your finish percentage time off the winner’s time.
-We score only your best 3 races in the whole series (of 7 races).
-If you ran 2 races in the Quail division and 3 in the Roadrunner division, they do NOT combine and will be listed in the results separately.
(Pro-Tip) Mesquite Canyon results are out of 1,250 points rather than the standard 1,000 which can make a significant difference in jumping the rankings. The 100 mile distance at Coldwater also receives additional points in the series standings.
-If you are 40+ years of age and lead the Open Division, you will be awarded in the Open/Overall Division and your ranking within the Master’s or Grand Master’s Division will go to the next runner on the list.
