Across the Years – Decades Edition!

10 Day race, anyone?

What?! Seriously. If there’s one thing you can say about Aravaipa Running – we sure don’t do things half-way. Yes, we are adding a 10-day to Across the Years for the 2019-2020 race but that’s not all. Our brainstorming session got out of hand and instead of relegating ourselves to “only” adding an additional 4 days, we got creative.

Here’s what’s going down this December 28 – January 7th

Our “typical” 6-day race and all its accompaniments (24-hour, 48-hour, and 72-hour) will be business as usual, taking place December 28 – January 3rd. Award ceremony still occurs January 3rd after the 6-day comes to a close. There are no alternate dates for any of these races (no changing the 6-day start to the 30th, etc).

So, without further ado here’s what’s new in 2019:

10-Day race starts December 28th and ends January 7th. Easy-peasy (unless you’re running it, of course)

Yes, but….

I like my 10-days served with a side of challenge

Because 10-day races aren’t challenging enough, we’re also giving you options.

There are a total of 4 different options over the 10-day race (beyond the standard rack up as many miles as you can over 10 days) to spice it up:

  • 10 Day Marathon Challenge – 10 days, 10 marathons
    • You’ll receive 10 separate marathon results, but awards will be based on total accumulative time
  • 10 Day Ultra-Challenge – 10 days, 10 50ks
    • You’ll receive 10 separate 50k results, but awards will be based on total accumulative time
  • 10 Day Evolution (You’ll register for the 10-day race, and receive a 10-day total distance at the end, but you’ll be following these daily distances)
    • In it for the Ks
      • 550KM Challenge is as follows: Day 1 – 10KM, Day 2 – 20KM… up to Day 10 – 100KM for a total of 550KM over 10 Days
    • The metric system confuses me
      • Well then, you must run more. 550 Mile Challenge (will we have any takers?): Day 1 – 10 Miles, Day 2 – 20 Miles… up to Day 10 – 100 Miles for a total of 550 Miles over 10 Days.

I do not understand these fixed-time things:

Don’t like the concept of racking up miles with your finish line determined by the clock? Fine. We’ll concede…

Fixed distance 200 Mile race – starts Friday January 3rd at 10AM – giving runners 95 hours to complete the mileage

Fixed distance 100 Mile race – starts Saturday January 4th at 8am – giving runners 73 hours to complete the mileage

Last Person Standing:

Starting at noon on Friday January 3rd, race til you drop in a last person standing event where competitors must complete one lap every 15 minutes with a new lap starting in increments of 15 minutes until only one is left. If you do not finish the lap within the 15 minutes, you’re out. If you are not on the starting line at each 15 minute increment, you’re out.

Making resolutions, breaking traditions:

Historically, the 6-day race was the longest event in the pedestrianism era as sporting events on Sundays were not permitted AND historically, the 24-hour has the been the shortest fixed-time event at Across the Years. This year we’re saying, actually, we do do things half way and adding a 12-hour and 6-hour race on Sunday January 5th!

On Saturday January 4th we’re hosting a 24-hour. Wait, you just said there no alternate days for the 24-hour?! Ah, well… I never said this was simple. However, if you want to run in this 24-hour you need a buddy or two, or three.

2, 3, or 4-person relay teams will compete over 24 hours. One runner on course at a time and your team must pass a baton with your team’s timing chip attached to the current on-course runner.

This is all well and good, but I’m running the 6-day and I like new things too

You won’t be disappointed. With RD Jubilee’s creativity we will be theming the start/finish and her attire daily by the decade. Fresh themes every day!

I HAVE SO MUCH FOMO!

Don’t miss out… can’t make it? We will also have a 1st edition Virtual Race Across The Years. This is a 24-hour race starting in your time zone at 9am December 31st and ending 9am January 1st. The race will benefit up to 3 different charity partners (of which you’ll get to choose the one your entry supports). We will reveal our 2019-2020 charity partners and more details soon!!
