Kendall Mountain Run 2016: Pre-Race Interview: Bob Boeder

Melia CouryPre-Race Interview

Bob Boeder Melia: You have kind of been around the ultra community a long time done: Western States, Hardrock, Wastch, and Kendall Mountain Run a bunch Bob: This will be my 15th Kendall Mountain Run. M: Wow, that’s an awesome number. B: I’m really looking forward to it. M: What keeps you coming back? B: Well I live here, it’s my neighborhood race. But it’s also a reason to get fit, to get in shape every summer. If I don’t have target race to train for, I’m like anyone else, I tend to get a little lazy. I probably don’t do as much uphill training as I should. M: Do you train on Kendall (Mountain) …

Eric Senseman Melia: I’m sitting down here with Eric Senseman the day before Kendall (Mountain Run). And congrats earlier this year you won our Elephant Mountain 35K Eric: Yeah, thanks very much. M: Yeah, and it was the second fastest time too. E: I was hoping for the fastest but doesn’t always work out. M: You were only like 7 or something minutes shy. E: Yeah, close enough. M: You’re up there. E: Yeah. M: So you have been doing a lot of ultras and now you are doing this Sky Race; what triggered that desire? E: No one thing necessarily. I like the style of the Sky Series. The distances are good. They are …

Melia CouryRace Report

A Race Riddled With Tradition Energetic rays of light flooded the town of Silverton this morning as nearly 300 runners towed the line of the 39th Kendall Mountain Run. As per tradition the race began in front of the Grand Imperial Hotel with the firing of a gun by Wiley Carmichael. He has ignited the race since the inaugural run 39 years ago. With the echoing bang the crowd of runners moved through the center street of town before ascending Kendall Mountain. During the race, runners experienced beautiful pines, breath taking views, and substantial elevation gain to the summit. Melia CouryPre-Race Interview

Justin Ricks Melia: You’ve kind of won the last few races you have done, the last four. Do you think that will give you some momentum going into this race? Or more excited to do a sky race? Justin: Mostly just excited to do a Sky Race. The last four races I don’t think the competition has been real tough and just for fun. Yeah, I’m excited to do the Sky Series and come out to Silverton. What a fun place to run and be at. M: How was running Kendall, before? J: Yeah I ran it in 2014. And we were here for Hardrock so I went up it a couple of weeks ago …

Melia CouryPre-Race Interview

Kelly Wolf Melia: Is this the first time you are running Kendall (Mountain Runs)? Kelly: This is the first time I’m running Kendall and this summer is the first time I’ve been to Silverton. M: And you recently moved up here after college right? K: Yeah, I graduated middle of May and moved up here with my friend Erica, about a week or two after that. So I’ve been here for a few months now. M: What attracted you to Silverton, that San Jauns maybe? K: The San Juans definetly, 100%. Just seeing pictures of the mountains, mountain running I just knew it was a magical area. And living at elevation is like a …

Emelie Forsberg Melia: You are getting ready for the Kendall Mountain Run tomorrow, right? Will this be your first US Sky Running race? Emelie: I have been running the Run the Rut. M: Congratulations on…you won that one right? And then Transvulcania and Mount Marathon. E: Yeah last year. I’m still rehabbing from my ACL injury so this will be interesting because it is a downhill. I have been running uphill races but I’m super excited to try downhill too. I wont be able to push in the downhill. M: Is there anything that you are most excited about the race? E: I think it is the downhill. Like the uphill I know my knee …

Melia CouryPre-Race Interview

ROB COSLICK Melia: I’m sitting down here with Rob Coslick and you are getting ready for the Kendall Run on Saturday. So you did the Flagstaff Extreme 54K race back in June and placed 3rd. Rob: Yeah, Big Pine. I have a tendency to go out quick and it was fun until that last loop. M: You have done a lot of 50K and 50 milers and now you are doing this Sky Race, what prompted that? R: There is a romance to the trail stuff. I’m just jumping right in. I am still very much a newbie. So I think I’m going into the scene looking at people like Jamil and Schlarb and a …

2013 Silverton 6/12/24 Hour

Jamil CouryRace Report

A smoky morning greeted runners at this year’s 2nd Annual Silverton 6/12/24 Hour Mountain Runs held at the Kendall Mountain Recreation Area.  The run takes place on a 1 mile loop on the Kendall Trail which was hand built by Rodger Wrublik and Jamil Coury in 2010 specifically for the Silverton 1000 mile challenge. The loop is not easy enough being at 9318 feet above sea level, but also climbs 250 feet up to the top of the ski lift on single track trails and a small section of dirt road. This is no Across The Years! The loop was accurately measured with a Rolotape surveyor’s wheel to be exactly 1 mile and runners aim …

Run Steep, Get High

Jamil CouryUltra Thoughts

Ok, so I have a bit of an obsession with the San Juan mountains of Southwestern Colorado and The Hardrock 100. It all started innocent enough. I had run a couple of ultra marathon races in 2005 and I was excited to see how far I could run. Sometime in the summer of 2006 I stumbled across these photos taken by Klas Eklof of the 2006 Hardrock 100 Mile Endurance Run. As soon as I got through the second or third page I knew that I HAD to run Hardrock. It was if it was calling my name. High altitude, steep & unrelenting climbs and descents, unpredictable weather, wildlife and amazing scenery staged through some …
