Course Information

Start Time | 7:00 am
Time Limit | 54 Hours
Max Elevation | 4,340 feet

The course starts off with a climb up through Waterville Valley and over your first peak of the race, Mount Tecumseh before descending to Osceola Aid. Next up is a climb up to the high point on the course atop Mount Osceola. You'll then make your way down and over past Sawyer River Aid which is in a new location in 2024 due to washouts on Sawyer River Road. After a quick out and back to Sawyer Aid, you'll be taking on the steep ascent up Mount Tremont. A descent off there will take you past Bartlett Experimental Forest before climbing two more major mountains (Big Attitash Mountain & North Moat Mountain). You'll descend down and hit the turnaround point at South Moat Aid.
NOTE: The small section that is blocked out in red is private property and have asked that we keep it private leading up to the event. We will release the CalTopo the week of the race so you can have the actual GPX file to download and have available.
The return trip starts off with a a fun, 2400 ft climb in 2.4 miles up South Moat and you will traverse the ridge until you get to the Attitash Trail on the bottom of North Moat. From here you'll head towards Bear Notch going over Big Attitash and Table mountain. You'll then work your way through Bartlett via the Barlett Experimental Forest and private land. From here, you'll hop on 302 and head to the Mt Tremont trailhead.
From here, you'll go up and over Mt Tremont and continuing down on Brunel Trail till you get to Rob Brook Rd. You'll follow this until you get to Sawyer River trail where you'll cross the stream to the aid once again. The course continues to go through Hancock Notch Trail to the hairpin turn on the Kanc.
From here, you'll get to go on a very short section of road to get your climbing legs back and then up through the Greeley Pond Scenic Area, crossing through the Mad River Notch where you'll head straight down the mountain on Greeley Pond Trail, eventually popping out on Tripoli Road. Again, you'll get to stretch the legs for the final miles to the town square at Waterville Valley on trails.
NOTE: There a couple short sections where you will be on a highway where it is absolutely critical that you are wearing your reflective vest and remaining off the roadway as much as possible. Take the extra few seconds to pull your vest out and put it on so everyone stays safe. We will have signs on the roads to alert vehicles but please use caution on these sections as you connect trail systems.

Mountain weather is subject to extreme changes and a large portion of the course over the mountain is fully exposed to the elements. Be responsible. You will be DISQUALIFIED if you do not carry the mandatory gear listed below.
NOTE: You will be showing event staff your required gear on the morning of your race. We will have 2-3 people checking to speed this up but please have your items readily available to show us and then pack it away.
Gear list:
- Minimum of 2 liters of water from the start and encouraged to take
more at the aid stations - Water filter (ie Katahdin BeFree)
- A minimum of 1000 calories
- Trail map with course marked on it (this will be provided)
- Emergency blanket
- GPX file uploaded into GPS, Watch or Phone
- Extra battery pack to charge phone/watch, etc
- Cell Phone or other communication device to call for help
- Headlight plus extra batteries. Two headlamps if they are the rechargeable kind
- Rain Jacket
- Gloves
- Warm Hat
- Compass or GPS (most watches and phones have a compass)
- Neon safety vest with large reflective areas (for roads)
- First Aid Kit (bandaids, ointment, etc.)
2025 NOTE: The "additional gear" will not be required for this year's race as warmer daytime temps are expected.
Possible additions to required gear (we may adjust based on weather forecast):
- Puffy jacket
- Hand warmers
- Winter hat and gloves
- Extra layers (tights and long sleeve)
- Buff / head wrap
If you do not have the required gear you will not race. This is a very serious undertaking and we don’t want you lost or dead. There are ZERO exceptions for any of this.
Crew
Due to the remoteness of the aid stations, there is no crew. You can have your crew sign up for a volunteer shift at an aid station and they can help you that way. Any crew found helping a runner unless they are working a volunteer shift will result in the runner being disqualified from the event. Our permit does not allow any crew.
Pacers: ALL PACERS MUST CARRY THE REQUIRED GEAR WHICH IS THE SAME AS THE RUNNER AND THEY MUST HAVE A GEAR CHECK BEFORE PACING.
You can have pacers starting at Sawyer Aid Station I. Pacers must join you at an aid station. The pacer is required to checkin with the aid crew, sign a waiver, have their gear checked (required gear is the same as runners), and they will receive a pacer bib that must be worn.
Pacers cannot leave cars at an aid station so you will need to make arrangements to have your pacer dropped off. NO MULING ALLOWED
Parking at the start/finish area will be the "back" lots at the Waterville Valley Town Square. From the parking lot, you'll see our registration/packet pickup area where you can leave your drop bags as well. The start line will be on the other side of the large barn, next to Corcoran Pond.
Campground: If you paid for camping, it will be at the Osceola Vista Campground which is off Tripoli Road, just over 2 miles from the start/finish. We have a number of group campsites within the campground. You can check in starting Thursday and stay until Monday morning.
There is decent cell service (Verizon) and there are portable restrooms on site. No showers but you can use the showers at the Campton Campground about 10 minutes away.
Osceola Vista Campground
All aid stations will allow drop bags. We highly recommend weather sealed / rain proof bags for all aid stations. Label bags with your name and/or bib number.
Please bring your drop bags on RACE MORNING. We will have designated areas for each aid station. Double check where each bag is being dropped so it goes to the correct aid!
During your race, please place in the discard drop bag pile on your last trip through that aid station so we can transport back to the finish line.
This is not an elementary race. You will need to be comfortable following maps and GPS data which we will provide and you will be required to have uploaded to your watch/phone/GPS. The course will be unmarked. The signage is easy to follow but you will need to pay attention.
100 Milers: Due to the remote and rugged nature of this course you will need to have completed a 50 mile run within the past year or a similar mountain effort. The 50 mile run should be one with significant elevation gain and time on your feet. If you spend your days in the mountains the Pemi Loop, Kilkenny Traverse, ETC are all acceptable. We want you to be familiar with long mountain days.
50 Milers: Due to the remote and rugged nature of this course you will need to have completed a 50 Km run within the past year or a similar mountain effort. The 50 Km run should be one with significant elevation gain. If you spend your days in the mountains the Pemi Loop, Kilkenny Traverse, ETC are all acceptable. We want you to be familiar with long mountain days.
There will be aid stations but also some long stretches without aid where you should be comfortable filtering water if necessary. If it is a hot day you may need to filter water.
Familiarity with the White Mountains is also helpful but not required to run the race.

We will have two school buses to shuttle you to the South Moat Trailhead where the 50 mile begins. Both buses will arrive at Waterville Valley at 4:50am and depart for the South Moat Trailhead at 5:00am SHARP!! You must be on the bus before 5:00am as the drive is around 1 hour and 20 minutes. You can leave your vehicle in the designated town square parking lots while racing.
There will be packet pickup before you hop on the bus beginning at 4:00am. Once you've shown that you have ALL required gear to start the race you will be given your bib and can hop on the bus. You will also be able to leave drop bags at this time.
We will do our best to expedite the gear check but please expect there to be a short line when arriving on site. Having the proper gear outside of your bag so we can easily view and check it off will speed things up as well. Thank you!
NOTE: Very Important- You may NOT be dropped off at the South Moat Trailhead start line with your personal vehicle or park there for our race. It is a very small (and busy) trailhead and the rangers will be there to make sure we are not claiming spots. Thank you!
