Course Summary

Just approved! Join Aravaipa Running for the inaugural running of The Incline Tumble, Manitou Springs’ newest must do trail race that should give Mount Marathon a run for its money as the must see live event of the year. A 3 kilometer mass start race from the base to the top of The Incline and back will have not only your lungs bursting, your quads quivering but likely you sh*ting your pants on the harrowing descent back down while passing the rest of the field.

In the spirit of the famed Pikes Peak Marathon, participants will race up the 2744 steps and 2000 feet of elevation gain to the top of the Manitou Incline before taking an optional shot of Whiskey (or Red Bull) and plummeting all the way back down. There will of course be awards for the fastest times of the roundtrip, but also the pure descent offering a bonus $1000 prize for the top descenders.

Thanks to our partnership with the local governments of Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs we’ve been granted exclusive permission to utilize the mountain on America’s Birthday for likely the most action packed day of racing in the Lower 48.

Race proceeds benefit the Wild Lands Accessibility Action Team (WLAAT) to donate 100% of the proceeds of each edition of the Tumble to improve outdoor access (See details below on our unique project supporting the future of the Manitou Incline).

For a Good Cause
The inspiration behind the creation of The Incline Tumble is to pave the way for accessibility of outdoor spaces. We’ve noticed a real issue in the greater Colorado Springs region about how accessible our wild lands truly are. Aravaipa Running is proud to partner with the Wild Lands Accessibility Action Team (WLAAT) to donate 100% of the proceeds of each edition of the Tumble to improve outdoor access.

We aim to raise over $70,000 in the the inaugural running of the event to help fund alongside matching grants from both REI Inc. & The Department of the Interior for engineering studies to begin the improvement of the Accessibility of The Incline Phase I project.

We hope to raise enough in the first year to complete Phase I installation of a continuous concrete stairway to replace the first 138 tired, worn out and uneven railroad tie steps of the Incline. Our dream is to eventually have a completely homogenous, consistent height concrete stairway all the way up to the Incline Summit. Please help us realize this dream by signing up today or donating directly to the WLAAT (a 501c(3) Non-Profit organization).

Weather

The weather could be warm in the afternoon with highs averaging 75 degrees with a morning low of 45 degrees. Snow showers possible.

All runners must reach the summit within 2 hours of the race start, otherwise must turn around and head back down the mountain at that point via provided snow sleds.

Medical

We will have EMTs stationed every 250 stairs along the Incline to support injuries, falls and concussions. This team is here to assist with basic and advanced first aid right on site. We reserve the right to pull you from the race if medical officials deem it necessary. Please understand that these decisions are made for your safety. Continuing on in a state where you cannot safely navigate is a recipe for disaster and we are here to prevent that. A helicopter, ambulance and mortician will be on standby at the cog railway at the base of the mountain.

Should something happen while you are out on the course, we will provide a phone number to call for immediate assistance.

We will be roasting s’mores back at Soda Springs park in the evening too!

Course Marking
The race courses will be well marked using orange plastic ribbons with black polka dots. Trail junctions and turns will be well marked with colored laminated signs that correspond with your race’s color. Please pay attention to these signs at each junction as there are multiple race distances and race courses! In addition, blue & white checkerboard plastic flagging will be hung around the necks of 12 robotic barking dogs denoting non-race or “WRONG WAY” trails. All runners are responsible for understanding the layout of the courses. Please familiarize yourself with the course maps on our website prior to race day and/or print a map to bring along with you.
