What is your most memorable race experience?

Hands down my first time at Hardrock in 2008.  I got into the race off the wait list 19 hours before it started. I had no expectations except a hope to finish.  I took it easy and soaked in the stellar scenery all day and kept moving all night.  As the sun came up I began moving faster and faster.  By mile 85 I was out of control, and made up 90 minutes by the finish to catch 5th place in the last half mile.  I never imagined running so fast at the end of any race, much less this one.

What is your favorite place to train?

I’m a sucker for tracks and tall mountains =)  Seriously though, I love any kind of running surface whether its absurdly scenic and tough, a nice cruiser trail, or even running around in circles

What is your favorite snack during a race?

Gummy worms.  Not only are they tasty and easy on the stomach, they’re also colorful and fun!

If you listen to music during your run, what do you listen to?

Don’t really listen to music on runs.  If I’m training long distances on the track, I’ll occasionally throw on some educational lectures

When you aren’t running, what do you do with your spare time?

Sometimes I fantasize about mathematics or dream up plans to change the world

What inspires you to go the ultra distance?

The unsung heroes of the sport.  They push the limits of what’s possible, then go home to their families and lives without looking for any kind of recognition.  I usually find that what they do in running closely mirrors what they’re doing for the world around them too

What is your favorite book?

There’s a two volume tome called Unknown Mexico by Carl Lumholts about the life and culture of the Raramuri natives of Mexico.  Most people know them because of their endurance running, but its everything else about them that fascinates me.

Do you have any pets?

Don’t have any currently.  Grew up with our family’s dog Sparky.

Any other sponsors?

Aravaipa Running has been gracious enough to sponsor me.  I’m pretty close with the organizers.  I once got a pair of socks from Jenn Shelton if that counts.

What past performances are you most proud of?

  • I have completed all two of my four races this year.
  • I ran 136 miles in 24 hours in 2010.  I ate about 20 oranges en-route and my crew thought I was going to turn orange.
  • I’ve been the first international runner at the Copper Canyon Ultramarathon the past two years.  I still only got 6th and 7th.  I also got beat by some 8 year olds at their rarajipari ball game.
  • I got 5th at Hardrock in 2008.  I looked so good at mile 91 that the aid station thought I was the pacer.

What is your 2012 Race Schedule?

Race schedule: TBD
But put me down for all the Aravaipa events
